PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College wrestling team opened the home portion of its schedule by taking two of its three matches Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Lake Erie Quad I held at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic and Wellness Center.
After dropping their opening match to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Tiffin Unversity, 22-16, the Storm (2-1, 0-1 GLIAC) bounced back with nonconference wins over Waynesburg University (30-7) and York College (19-18).
Tiffin opened the morning session with decision victories at 125 and 133 pounds before the Storm won four straight matches to take a 16-6 lead. Freshman Cobey Fehr (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton) and sophomore Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) earned back-to-back decision victories at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Freshman Christan Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) pinned Zach Teill early in the second period at 157 pounds and sophomore All-American 165-pounder Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) picked up a 9-1 major decision over Trevor Kickolai.
But the Dragons (4-3, 1-0 GLIAC) came back and took the final four matches, including a pin and a major decision, to post the 22-16 final in the teams' first GLIAC match of the season.
Lake Erie responded with a convincing win over Waynesburg (0-4). Sophomore Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and sophomore Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) bounced back with victories at 125 and 133, respectively, to open the scoring. Fehr, Ball and Vandermeer all won by decision as did junior Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) at 174 pounds and sophomore Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) at heavyweight. Sophomore Mikey Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) pinned Patrick Jennings at 197 to join Gillihan with wins by fall in the session.
The Storm came out strong in the final session, winning the first five matches against York (5-3) to take a 16-0 lead. After Vandermeer was upset at 165 pounds by Adam Kritzer, Tesny came back with a 9-4 win over T.J. Demetrio at 174 pounds. That proved to be the match that won it for the Storm, as the Spartans came back to win the final three contests to close it to a one-point margin.
The Storm's middle weight classes from 141-165 combined to go 10-2 on the day. Fehr and Ball led the way going 3-0.
Ross, Gillihan, Vandermeer and Tesny all picked up two wins apiece.
In the other matches, Tiffin defeated York 31-13 and Waynesburg 25-12x while York beat Waynesburg 22-15.
The Storm is off for the Thanksgiving holiday break and returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, at home against nonconference rival Seton Hill University at 7 p.m.
