PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Trailing 13-11 seven matches in, the Lake Erie College wrestling team rallied to win the final three contests of the night en route to a 23-13 victory over Seton Hill University on Saturday night (Dec. 1) at the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center.

Junior 184-pounder Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) started the rally with a 5-2 decision over Dylan Bushby in a tough match that left both wrestlers bloodied and battered.  Redshirt sophomore Mikey Samijlenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) followed with a 3-0 win over Edwin Callendar at 197 pounds, picking up a first-round takedown and then holding his opponent at bay the rest of the match.

Freshman Almonte Patrick (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) put an exclamation point on the night with a pin of Eric Minerd 52 seconds into their heavyweight bout to seal the win for the Storm (3-1).  It was Patrick's first appearance this season in the Storm lineup.

The Griffins (2-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the opening bout of the night, a 4-3 victory by Steve Smith over sophomore Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) in triple overtime.  Sophomore Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) got Lake Erie on the scoreboard with a major decision at 133 pounds, defeating Mike Grant 11-2 on the strength of back-to-back near falls late in the second period.

Seton Hill scored one-point victories at both 141 (6-5) and 149 (8-7) pounds to go up 9-4 before junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) earned a 13-5 major decision over Adam Moranduzzo at 157 pounds.

Sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) followed with a 3-0 win over Brett Smith at 165 pounds to put Lake Erie back on top at 11-9.  The 174-pound match went to Seton Hill's Zach Benzio by major decision, 13-4, which put the Griffins up by the aforementioned 13-11 score.

Green earned his 10th overall win of the season, while Gillihan Vandermeer and Samijlenko each earned win number eight on the year.  Patrick ran his record to 7-1 while Vargo improved to 4-2 after missing two weeks of action.

The Storm head south next weekend for the annual Newberry College Duals on Sautrday, Dec. 8.
