Storm Look to Start New Win Streak Thursday Night at West Liberty
Jan 31, 2013
PAINESVILLE, OHIO – The Lake Erie College wrestling team will look to bounce back from having its three-match winning streak snapped last weekend, but will face another tough test on the road Thursday night (Jan. 31) at West Liberty University. First match is set for 7 p.m. at the Academic, Sports and Recreation Complext in West Liberty, W. Va.
The Storm (9-4) fell at second-ranked Notre Dame College, 33-6, on Sunday (Jan. 27), Lake Erie's first dual match defeat since Jan. 11 at then 12th-ranked University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Prior to the loss at NDC, the Storm had posted victories over Millersville University, Ashland University and Gannon University.
For the third consecutive Division II Wrestling Coaches Association national Top 20 poll, Lake Erie is listed among others receiving votes. West Liberty (4-6) is also included in that group. The Hilltoppers were ninth in the previous poll, but fell out of the rankings after posting a 1-4 mark at the East Coast Duals last weekend.
Sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) remains second in the individual national rankings at 165 pounds, despite having his 13-match winning streak snapped at Notre Dame. However, that loss came to the Falcons' top-ranked Joey Davis.
West Liberty is currently ranked ninth in the Super Region One team rankings, and five Hilltoppers are individually ranked.
These two teams met last season for the first time, with Lake Erie earning a 25-12 victory over the Hilltoppers at home on Dec. 14, 2011.
The Storm will next be in action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when approximately 15 team members will compete at the annual John Suma Memorial Tournament at Baldwin Wallace University.
