Rosborough, Vargo Advance to Semis After Day One of Regionals

TIFFIN, Ohio-- 157-pounder Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and 197-pounder Evan Rosborough (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) advanced to the semifinals of the Super Region Two Championships after the first day of action in Tiffin, Ohio today (Feb. 28).
Overall, five Storm wrestlers are still alive heading into day two of the competition. The top-five finishers of each weight class advances to the NCAA Division-II Championships held in Cleveland March 14-15.
2013 national runner-up and third-ranked Vargo pinned Belmont Abbey College's Jake Glunt in the first round. He continued to roll in his second-round match, pinning Anderson University's Zane Newton to advance to the semifinals. Vargo will face Taylor Knapp of Newberry College tomorrow.
Rosborough won his first match by major decision, 14-2, over Eldon Valery of King. Rosborough then earned a hard fought 3-2 decision over the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Davien Willis to move onto the semifinals. Rosborough will face Julian Smith of McKendree University tomorrow.
At 165-pounds, Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) picked up second round pins in his first two bouts, over King College's Travis Edwards and Coker College's Phillip Burrows. In his quarter final match, Tesny fell to Newberry College's Blake Ridenour, placing him in the consolation bracket. In his consolation match, Tesny defeated Daniel Callahan of Belmont Abbey by major decision, 11-2, to move onto day two. He will face Nick Fishback of Parkside tomorrow.
141-pounder Dylan Kager (Shalersville, Ohio/Crestwood) pinned McKendree University's Ryan Stope in the first round before falling to Justin Keiffer of the University of Indianapolis. In his consolation match, Kager defeated Bobby Mason, 6-2, to move onto day two. Kager will face Taylor Wickett of Limestone College tomorrow.
Chevy Farris (Ferndale, Mich./Ferndale) fell in his first round match but picked a 16-0 technical fall in the 184-pound consolation round over Ohio Valley's Ben Willard. In his second consolation match, Farris defeated Pembroke's Brach Walker 5-2 to advance to day two. He will face Belmont Abbey's Marcus Dwaileebe tomorrow.
Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) picked up a 15-0 technical fall over University of North Carolina-Pembroke's Cole Murray but was unsuccessful in his next two matches, falling to second-ranked Michael Labry of Ashland University and Coker's Charlie Huff.
125-pounder Keanu Thompson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Grand Street Campus) and heavyweight Bobby Zappitelli (Painesville, Twp., Ohio/Lake Catholic) each picked up wins after falling in the opening round but were unable to advance to day two.
