Wrestling Splits Day One at Midwest Regional Duals

BELMONT, NC – The #23 Lake Erie College wrestling team opened the Midwest Regional Duals on Friday (Jan. 26) with matchups with #22 King University and Queens University.

The Storm began the day with a 23-16 victory over #22 King. Lake Erie won five of the final six matches to erase an eight point lead. In the second dual of the day, the Storm battled back from a 12 point deficit by winning four of the last six matches against Queens. The match was tied after the ten matches and the match had to go to tie-breaker criteria. Queens won the match 22-21 on the second tie-breaker criteria.

King picked up six points with a second-period fall in the 125 pound weight class. 133-pounder Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) dominated Jacob Wynn with a 19-3 technical fall as Lake Erie pulled within one point. King got a decision at 141 pounds and a major decision at 149 pounds, for a 13-5 lead through four matches. Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) followed with a 15-5 major decision over Matthew Danner in the 157 pound weight class. Seventh-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston), the NCAA Division II leader for technical falls, gave the Storm a 14-13 lead after a 16-0 technical fall over Bailey Slattman at the 165 pound weight class. Vandermeer now has seven technical falls this season. Brendan Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) defeated Darius Rutland with a 7-3 decision for the 174 pound match. Ninth-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) was victorious at 184 pounds with a 9-3 decision. King picked up a decision at 197 pounds before Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) sealed the Storm victory with a 7-3 decision at 285 pounds. Lake Erie won the dual 26-13.

Queens started the dual with a 9-0 lead after a fall at 125 pounds and a 2-1 decision at 133 pounds. Alex Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) got the Storm on the board with a 10-7 decision versus Daniel Goodwin at 141 pounds. Queens won via forfeit in the 149 pound weight class as they led 15-3 after four weight classes. 157-pounder Zach Ruggles (Marietta, N.Y. / Marcellus) responded with a first-period pin of Micah Marcin, pulling the Storm with six, at 15-9. Malachi Strickland (Massillon, Ohio / Massillon Perry) won his 165 pound match with an 11-3 major decision over Stephon Halliburton. Queens won the 174 pound weight class with a 13-7 decision, taking an 18-13 lead after seven matches. Hughes tied the dual at 18 with a 17-2 technical fall over Brandon Stern at 184 pounds. Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley / Stark State) gave Lake Erie a 21-18 advantage with a 10-3 decision in the 197 pound weight class. Queens won the 285 pound weight class with a 4-2 decision, tying the match at 21. Queens won the tie-breaker criteria with the most combined number of falls, forfeits, defaults, and disqualifications.

The Storm will return to the mat on Saturday (Jan. 27) with four matches at the Midwest Regional Duals. Lake Erie will compete against Coker, #13 Newberry, Limestone and Belmont Abbey, beginning at 9:00 AM.
