BELMONT, N.C. – The #23 Lake Erie College wrestling team concluded the weekend with four matches at the Midwest Regional Duals, held at Belmont Abbey College on Saturday (Jan. 27) afternoon.
Lake Erie finished 2-2 on Saturday and went 3-3 in duals for the weekend. The Storm defeated Coker College 40-9 in the opening match of the day. In the second match, Lake Erie fell to #13 Newberry College 25-16. Limestone held off a late Lake Erie rally in a 20-15 defeat of the Storm in match number three of the day. The Storm ended the day with a 26-17 victory over the host Belmont Abbey.
In the first match of the day, Lake Erie opened with three consecutive falls over Coker for an 18-0 lead. #10 Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield), Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) and Zane Johnson (Plain City, Ohio / Jonathan Alder) all picked up falls in 125, 133 and 141 pounds. Coker won the 149 pound match before Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) picked up a 16-8 major decision at 157 pounds. Seventh-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) opened the Storm's lead to 28-3 with a first period fall over Hunter Corwin at 165 pounds. Coker got decision victories at 174 and 285 pounds but Lake Erie picked up falls from #9 Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) and Jesse Palser (Mansfield, Ohio / Mansfield) at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.
B. Glogouski put the Storm up 3-0 with an 11-6 decision at 125 pounds against Newberry. Newberry won the next four matches, taking a 16-3 advantage after five matches. Vandermeer won his 165-pound match with a quick fall in the first period. Newberry won the 174 pound weight class with a technical fall. Hughes responded with a technical fall at 184 pounds as Lake Erie pulled within seven points. Palser won via a 9-6 decision at 197 pounds. Lake Erie trailed 21-17 going into the final match. Newberry won by a major decision at 285 pounds and won the dual 25-16.
B. Glogouski picked up his third win of the day with a third period fall, giving the Storm an early 6-0 lead. Limestone rallied with four consecutive match wins as the Saints took the 14-6 advantage. Vandermeer, Hughes and Palser got decision victories as the Storm won three of the next four matches. Limestone took a 17-15 lead into the final match and sealed the dual win with a decision, winning 20-15.
B. Glogouski capped a perfect day at 125 pounds with his third pinfall victory at 125 pounds against Nathan Oakley of Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey won the next four weight classes for a 17-6 lead. The Storm closed out the dual with five straight victories. Hughes, Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley / Stark State) and Brandon Houle (Sparta, Mich. / Rockford / Hope) all picked up victories by decision. Vandermeer earned his eighth technical fall of the season and Brendan Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) picked up a third period fall as Lake Erie won the final dual of the day with a 26-17 victory.
Hughes finished the weekend with a perfect 6-0 record, including three decisions, two technical falls and one fall. Vandermeer was 5-0 overall with two tech falls and two pins. B. Glogouski wrestled four matches and was perfect with pinfalls in three of them. Palser was 3-1 for the weekend while F. Glogouski, Lieb, Winning and Houle all won two matches each.
The Storm will host #18 Findlay on Saturday (Feb. 3) for Senior Night at the Osborne Center.
