LYNDHURST, Ohio— A header late in the first half by junior Paige Nemec (Mantua, Ohio/Crestwood) lifted the Lake Erie College women's soccer team (2-6-1, 1-3-1 GLIAC) to a 1-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Notre Dame College for the second time this season on Saturday (Sept. 29) at Korb Field in Lyndhurst.
The win snapped a four-game winless (0-3-1) streak for the Storm (2-6-1, 1-3-1 GLIAC), who picked up their first conference win since a 2-1 home victory over Ohio Dominican University on Oct. 24, 2010. Lake Erie had been 0-19-1 in GLIAC play since.
Nemec scored the lone goal of the contest in the 44th minute of play. Following a Valerie Urbanik (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) shot attempt that was blocked out of bounds by the Falcons, Chrissy Poulos (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) delivered a corner kick from the left side which was headed in by Nemec from three-yards out for her first goal of the season. The Storm's defense allowed just five shots in the second half to secure the team's first road win of the season.
Megan Baldacci (Cavecreek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) led the Storm defense with three saves and earned her third shutout of the season. The Storm held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks to nullify the Falcons' 9-7 edge in shots.
This was the second one-goal victory over the Falcons (3-6, 2-3 GLIAC) for the Storm this year. Back on Sept. 10, an Urbanik goal in double-overtime lifted the Storm past the Falcons in Painesville, a game that did not count towards the GLIAC standings.
The loss was the third in four games for NDC.
The Storm return to the pitch on Thursday (Oct. 4) to host GLIAC foe Findlay University (2-4-1, 2-1-1) at 12:30 pm at The Britt in Painesville.
