PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The goal Lake Erie College women's soccer recovered from an early to net two of their own early in the second half as they defeated Saginaw Valley State University 2-1 Friday (Oct. 18) in a key Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The Cardinals controled the flow of the game for the majority of the first half. Their offensive pressure ultimately paid off on a shot by Ashley Henderson put Saginaw Valley State on the board. Though the Cardinals continued to pressure, they were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the first half as Storm goalkeeper Sarah Stroope (Oxford, Mich./Oxford) made saves. Abigal O'Hair (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) Elizabeth Awuah (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) both had scoring chances late in the first-half but nearly missed, high and wide respectively.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Awuah put the Storm on the board with a header off of a Elizabeth Roesch (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) free kick. Minutes later, Awuah lofted a shot over Cardinal goalkeeper Kaily Naumcheff which Robin Hames (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) caught up to and redirected into the net to give the Storm a 2-1 advantage. The Storm defense kept the score in tact despite the Cardinal pressure the rest of the half to seal the win.
Stroope ended the game with nine saves.
The Storm are back on the pitch Sunday (Oct. 29), playing host to GLIAC foe Northwood University.
