PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College volleyball team (2-8, 0-5 GLIAC) were unable to prevail against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Ashland University (11-2, 4-1 GLIAC) Tuesday night (Sept. 25), falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-16).
The Storm jumped out to a fast start in the first set, gaining a 8-5 advantage before Ashland tied it at nine. The Eagles rallied for a 10-4 run to take a 19-13 lead before a Storm timeout. The Storm fought back to a 22-18 score, but Ashland won the final three points, and the first set. Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) led the Storm with three kills and five digs.
The Eagle's momentum carried over to the second set, winning 25-12. Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) led the Storm in the set with three kills and two digs.
The Storm kept pace with the Eagles early in the third set, until the Eagles went on a 10-4 run, taking a 14-7 lead. Following a timeout, the Storm went on a 3-0 run to come within four points of the Eagles. Ashland responded with a 6-0 run take 20-10 lead. The Storm rallied once again following a timeout, closing the gap to 21-13, but it was not enough Ashland captured the three-set victory 25-16.
Richardson led the Storm with seven kills. Rachel Ritt (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) tallied 17 digs.
Kate Eckels recorded 11 kills and Marci Zegarac had 14 digs to lead the Eagles in the win.
The Storm return to action this weekend at "Wolverine State" opponents Saginaw Valley State University (5-8, 1-3 GLIAC) in University Center, Mich on Friday (Sept. 28) and Lake Superior State University (2-9, 0-4 GLIAC) in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich on Saturday (Sept. 29).
