PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College women's volleyball team were defeated in straight sets by GLIAC leading Northwood University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday (Oct. 20) in Painesville.
Northwood (17-5, 11-0) won the sets 25-20, 25-7, 25-9.
The Huskies got off to a fast start in the opening set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Northwood kept strong following a Storm (3-17, 0-11 GLIAC) timeout, increasing their lead to 22-14. The Storm fought back, winning four straight points to close the gap to 22-18 and forcing Northwood to call a timeout but once again, the Huskies came out strong after the timeout, winning the opening set 25-20.
Juniors Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) and Kristen Swann (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) recorded three kills apiece in the set, while senior Rachel Ritt (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) led the Storm with five digs.
Lake Erie fell behind early in the second set before tying the score at four. The Huskies rallied, going on an 8-0 run to take a 12-4 lead., and eventually won the set 25-7.
The teams exchanged points early in the third set, but the Huskies were able to win the set, and the subsequently the match, 25-9.
Richardson led the Storm with six kills in the match, while Hoppe led in digs with eight. Swann and Andrea Harris (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) recorded four kills apiece, and Ritt ended the match with seven digs. The Storm committed 32 errors.
Krysta Kramer led the Huskies with eight kills. Erin Hoomaian and Zina Liubymova combined for 19 digs.
The Storm return to action on Friday (Oct. 26) in Caton, Ohio, facing GLIAC foe Malone University (13-8, 6-5 GLIAC) at 7pm.
