PAINESVILLE, OHIO-- The Lake Erie College volleyball team concluded their 2012 season with a loss against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Wayne State University in straight sets on Saturday (Nov. 10) in Painesville.
Wayne State (17-12, 11-7 GLIAC) won the sets 25-12, 25-16, 25-13.
The Warriors started out the match strong, jumping out to a 4-1 lead before the Storm (3-24, 0-18 GLIAC) ripped three straight points to tie it at four. The teams traded points until they were tied at six but Wayne State went on a 4-0 run to gain a 10-6 advantage and forced a Storm timeout. The timeout did not deter the Warrior momentum, as they continued to control the tempo of the first set, picking up the first set win 25-12.
The Storm won the first two points of the second set, but the Warriors quickly tied it up and took the lead at 5-2. The Storm fought back and won three straight points to tie it at five. The teams exchanged points until the Warriors gained a 12-9 advantage. The Storm were unable to overcome the Warrior run, dropping the second set 25-16.
Aultz led the Storm with three kills in the set, while Ferry collected eight digs.
The teams were even to start the third set but once again, Wayne State found themselves in front 11-7. The Storm were unable to fend off the Warrior onslaught as they called a timeout down 18-9. The timeout was not enough to interrupt the Warrior's momentum, as they captured the victory with a 25-13 set win.
Aultz led the Storm offense with eight kills in the match, while Ferry led with 11 digs. Seniors Rachel Ritt (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Paige Baldauf (Marion, Ohio/Marion Pleasant) and Minotas combined for 11 digs in their final game with the Storm.
Kristen Bulkiewicz led Wayne State with 11 kills and Lindsey Graciak led with 12 digs.
The Storm finish the year with a 3-24, 0-18 GLIAC record. Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) led the Storm with 190 kills and tallied 155 digs. Senior Rachel Ritt led the Storm on the defensive side with 220 digs. Sophomore Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Strockbridge) led the team with 470 assists. The Storm saw significant contributions from several other players. Junior Molly Richardson recorded 178 kills and 52 digs. Sophomore Sara Aultz was a presence on the defensive front, blocking 50 attacks. Senior Paige Baldauf totaled 103 digs and five aces while classmate Stephanie Minotas recorded 82 digs. Junior Andrea Harris (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) led the team with 27 aces. Freshman Mallory Gustincic was second on the team with 100 assists. Junior Kristin Swann (Rochester, Mich./Rochester) added 47 kills and 17 aces. Sophomore Destiny Prusky (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) picked up 31 kills. Defensive specialists Kathryn Ferry and Alexis Bankson (Churulusco, Ind./Churulusco) combined for 99 digs-80 and 19 respectively.. Freshman Hannah Evans (Powell, Ohio/ Worthington Christian) added a kill and two digs.
The Storm will return 14 players for the 2013 season and look to improve upon the foundation laid down this season.
