BAY CITY, Mich.-- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) released their 2013 Coaches' Preseason Poll on Tuesday (Aug. 27). Defending GLIAC Champion Northwood University was selected to win the North Division while Ashland University was selected to win the South Division.
Northwood received 45 totals points, including five first-place votes to top the North Division, followed by Ferris State University with 42 points and two first-place and Hillsdale College with 35 points and one first-place votes. Grand Valley State University, Northern Michigan University, Saginaw Valley State University, Michigan Technological University and Lake Superior State University round out the rest of the division.
Ashland University was selected to win the South Division after receiving 47 points and five first-place votes. Wayne State University was the only other school in the South to receive first=place votes, garnering three and 44 points. University of Findlay, Malone University, Ohio Dominican University, Walsh University, Tiffin University and Lake Erie College rounded out the rest of the division.
On Dec. 12, 2012, a new chapter in the history of the Lake Erie College volleyball program started with the hiring of Andy Riesenberg as head coach. Riesenberg became the 18th head coach in the program's history. With a new coaching staff comes a transition period for the coaches and the players. Fortunately, Risenberg was able to join the program relatively soon after the fall season and work with the players through the spring season to be ready for the fall 2013 campaign.
Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) could be the top returning player for the Storm after earning a All-GLIAC Honorable Mention selection during her junior season. Hoppe finished last season with 190 kills and totaled 155 digs with 23 total blocks. Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) is also back after a strong junior year during which she totaled 178 kills, 52 digs and 29 total blocks. Junior Samantha Knepley's (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) 2012 season as setter included 470 assists. Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) is also back this season, her junior year, after finishing with 164 kills. At defensive specialist, Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) is back after a solid freshman season during which she totaled 80 digs. Senior Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) returns to the Storm this season after missing 2012 with injury.
