PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College Storm volleyball team opened up the 2013 home and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) portions of their schedule Friday evening (Sept. 20), but were unable to pick up the win against Wayne State University, falling 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-22).
The teams went back and forth early in the first set up until a 10-10 tie. Wayne State (4-5, 1-0 GLIAC) then gained the momentum, going on a 6-1 run to take control of the set and closed it out at a score of 25-18.
Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) and Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) led the Storm (0-5, 0-1 GLIAC) with three kills a piece in the set while Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) had two kills. Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) had four digs.
The Warriors got out to a fast start in the second set, scoring twelve of the first fifteen points, as they took the second set 25-15.
Richardson and Walter led the Storm in hitting with three kills apiece in the set. Hoppe once again led in digs, totaling five in the set.
The Storm started the third set on a 3-0 run but the warriors responded with a 3-0 run of their own to tie it up. Neither team was able to gain a distinct advantage until the Storm jumped ahead by three at 11-8. Once again, the Warriors were able to tie the game up at 11 after another 3-0 run. The Storm responded in a big way, scoring five of the next six points to take a 16-12 lead and forcing a Wayne State timeout.
Following the timeout, the Warriors controlled the flow, cutting the Storm lead to 19-17, forcing a Storm timeout. Lake Erie scored the first two points following the timeout but the Warriors quickly closed the gap to tie the set at 21 and finish the match with a 25-22 set win.
Walter recorded five kills in the third set to lead the Storm. Richardson had four digs while Alexis Bankson (Churulousco, Ind./Churubusco) added three.
Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) had 22 sets in the match. Walter led the the Storm in hitting with 10 kills and one ace. Richardson ended the game with seven kills and six digs. Hoppe led the Storm with 10 digs.
Kristen Bulkiewicz led the way for the Warriors with 15 kills and 11 digs.
The Storm return to action Saturday (Sept. 21) for a 6 pm match-up against GLIAC foe University of Findlay.
