ASHLAND, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College volleyball team was able to pick up a set at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Ashland University but ultimately were unable to overcome the Eagles, falling 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-10, 25-21) Tuesday evening (Oct. 1).
The Eagles got off to a fast start in the first set, scoring the first three points before the Storm tied it on a 3-0 run of their own. Tied at five, Ashland went on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 10-5 and eventually take the opening set, 25-14.
The Storm picked it up in the second set. After exchanging points throughout the early portion of set, the Storm went on a 3-0 run to take a 16-15 advantage. Tied at 19, the Storm went on a 5-0 run to take a 24-19 lead. The Eagles scored two points before Hoppe recorded a kill to close out the set for the Storm, 25-21.
Hoppe tallied four kills for the second straight set while also recording six digs. Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) tallied three kills and five digs in the set.
Ashland answered the Storm in the third set, going on a 10-2 run to open the set en route to a 25-10 set win.
Down 2-1, the Storm took a 6-3 lead early in the fourth set before the Eagles eventually tied the set at 12. With the Eagles up 17-13, the Storm went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 19 but it was not in the books for the Storm as Ashland went on a 6-2 run to close out the match.
Hoppe led the Storm with 12 kills in the match while Richardson had nine. Walter tallied seven kills and digs while serving up four aces. Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) led the Storm on the defensive side with nine digs.
Alli Cudworth led the Eagles with 18 kills while Marci Zegarac had 18 digs.
The Storm returns home on Friday (Oct. 4), hosting GLIAC foe Saginaw Valley State University.
