PAINESVILLE, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College volleyball team picked up for their first win of the season in a dramatic fashion, defeating Lake Superior State University in five sets (22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 17-24, 15-9) Saturday (Oct. 5) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Storm have won their past three five-set matches, dating back to last season.
Tied at seven in the first set, the Storm went on a 4-0 run to gain an 11-7 advantage. Following a timeout, the Lakers slowly mounted a comeback, tying the set at 17 at taking the lead at 19-18. The Lakers were able to maintain the small lead and close out the match, 25-23.
Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) led the Storm with three kills in the set while Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) and Alexis Bankson (Churulousco, Ind./Churubusco) had three digs apiece.
The Storm jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set. Following a Laker timeout, the Storm continued to roll, gaining a 10-4 advantage before the Lakers spouted off a 7-0 to take the 11-10 lead. The Storm regained their composure, going on a 4-0 run of their own to jump ahead 14-11. Lake Erie rode the momentum the rest of the set, capturing it 25-22 on a Walter kill.
Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) led the Storm offense with five kills. Walter and Bankson had three digs each for the set.
The momentum carried on through the third set as the Storm opened on a 5-0 run but the Lakers responded, tying the set at 10 before taking a 13-10 lead. Once again, the Storm fought back and brought the set to a draw at 16. After trading points, the Storm gained a small 20-18 lead, which brought about a Laker timeout. Ahead 24-21, the Lakers scored the next two points before Walter once again wrapped-up the set for the Storm with a kill.
Walter led the way for the Storm in the third set, tallying six kills and three digs while Ferry had six digs.
The teams were evenly matched in the fourth set until the Lakers broke ahead and took a 17-14 lead. Following a Storm timeout, Lake Superior State continued to control the pace of the game, evening the overall match with a 25-17.
Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind,/Bishop Dwenger) led the Storm with four kills in the set.
The Storm scored the first four points of the deciding set and amassed an 8-1 lead before the teams switched sides. The Storm maintained their lead throughout a steady Laker attack. With a 14-9 lead, Aultz recorded her 13th kill of the match to seal the Storm victory.
Aultz and Richardson had a team-high 13 kills apiece while Walter ended the match with 12. Bankson and Ferry combined for 23 digs- 12 and 11 respectively. As a team, the Storm had seven aces.
Emily Snyder led the Lakers with 22 kills while Meghan Drobish had 16 digs.
The Storm is back in action Tuesday (Oct. 8), traveling to nearby Ursuline University for a non conference matchup.
