SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio-- The Lake Erie College volleyball team was able to take a set from Ursuline College Tuesday night (Oct. 8) but were unable to come away with the match win, falling to the Arrows 3-1 (25-13, 25-16, 18-25, 25-17).
Ursuline jumped out to an early lead in the opening set until the Storm evened the set out at 12. After alternating a pair of points, the Storm moved ahead, 17-14 lead but it was short lived as the Arrows went on a 5-2 run to tie the set back up at 19. Tied at 23, Ursuline rattled off two straight point to take the first set.
The Arrows limited the Storm offense in the second set. Up 12-11, Ursuline closed out the set on a 13-5 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Once again, Hoppe led the Storm in kills, recording five.
The Storm fought back in the third set, opening on a 9-2 run. Lake Erie continued to hit well in the set and found themselves up 24-18 when Sara Aultz (Wooster, Ohio/Orrville) closed it out with her eighth kill of the set, assisted by Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge), bringing the match score to 2-1.
After trading points early in the fourth set, the Arrows went on a 3-0 to go ahead 9-6. Ursuline nursed their lead throughout the set, closing it out on a 8-3 run to take the match 3-1.
Aultz had a game-high fifteen kills while Richardson and Hoppe combined for 25- 14 and 11 respectively. Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) had a game-high 15 digs and Hoppe was just behind with 14.
Alex Leister led the Arrows offense with 14 kills while Kelly Stenger led the defensive front with eight digs.
The Storm return home Friday (Oct. 11) to host Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Grand Valley State University.
