PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Storm put up career numbers Tuesday night (Oct. 15) against non conference foe Urbana University, but ultimately fell to the Blue Knights in four sets (25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23).
The Blue Knights marched out to a 9-4 lead in the first set but the Storm went on a 5-1 run to tie it at 10. Urbana was able to gain a small advantage, 18-14, which led to a Storm timeout. Following the Storm timeout, the Blue Knights pulled ahead 23-14 but a 5-0 run by Lake Erie forced an Urbana timeout. The Storm's momentum was unable to carry through the timeout as the Blue Knights scored two straight points to close out the set.
Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) led the Storm with four kills and two aces in the set while Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) and Andrea Harris (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek) had 14 digs, eight and six respectively.
After trading points to open the second set, the Storm garnered a 13-10 lead. Lake Erie maintained their three point lead throughout most of the second set but the Blue Knights tied the set at 22 on the heels of a 3-0 run. After alternating points, the Blue Knights scored the final two points to take the second set.
Richardson tallied seven kills in the second set while Hoppe had six digs.
The Storm came out of the break on fire, jumping out to a 7-3 lead, bringing about an Urbana timeout. The timeout did not halt the Storm's momentum as they moved ahead, 12-6. The Blue Knights cooled the Storm off and brought the game within one at 15-14 but the Storm went on a 4-0 run which put the set out of reach for Urbana.
Hoppe recorded seven digs in the third set. Richardson was on fire in the third, picking up eight kills.
Momentum carried over to the fourth set for Lake Erie as the Storm took an early lead but the Blue Knights were able to tie the set at seven. Neither team was able to find a distinct advantage and found themselves tied at 22 late in the set, the Blue Knights closed out the match by scoring three of the final four points.
Richardson ended the game with a career-high 22 kills to go with seven digs. Mikaela Lengal (Brunswick, Ohio/Brusnwick/Ashland) also has hit double-digits in kills with 10. Hoppe had a career-high 23 digs while Harris also had a career-high with 11. Mallory Gustincic (Medina, Ohio/Medina)
Kelsey Volkmer led Urbana with 21 kills while Brooke Turner had 18 digs.
The Storm return to the court Friday (Oct. 18) when they Travel to Hillsdale College for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.
