PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College volleyball team concluded the home portion of the 2013 schedule Tuesday (Nov. 11) with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) win over Ursuline College, avenging an earlier season loss to the Arrows.
The Arrows grabbed an early lead in the opening set but the Storm rebounded to tie the game at six. Lake Erie rattled off five straight points at that point to pull ahead 11-6. The Arrows shot back, tying the game at 14 and eventually taking a 17-14 lead before the Storm called a timeout. Ursuline continued the build its advantage, leading by as much as four before the Storm cut the lead down to two, forcing an Arrow's timeout. Following the timeout, the Storm tied the set at 22. The Storm won the following point off a Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) kill, but the Arrows tied it up on the ensuing point. The Arrows were unable to follow up on the serve, committing an error and giving the Storm a match point. After an Ursuline timeout, Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) picked up a kill after long rally to give the Storm the set win.
Richardson led the Storm with five kills in the opening set. Hoppe and Kathryn Ferry (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central Catholic) had four digs apiece.
The Storm jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the second set before the Arrows tied it at four and took an 8-4 advantage that led to a Storm timeout. The Storm slowly chipped away at the Arrows lead following the timeout, bringing the set score within one at 12-11. The teams went back and forth until the Storm tied the set at 14. The Storm's momentum continued through an Ursuline timeout as they went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. Up 24-18, Richardson ended a long rally with a kill to put the Storm up two sets.
Richardson had six kills in the set while Hoppe and Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) had three each. Hoppe also added nine digs.
Ursuline controlled the pace of the third set early on but the Storm closed the gap and kept the set within a couple points until the Storm called a timeout, down 20-17. Following the timeout, the Storm tied the game at 21 on two straight Walter aces. After the Arrows called a timeout, the Storm won three straight points to earn a match point. After Ursuline staved off the first attempt, Hoppe recorded the match winning kill.
Richardson ended the match with 14 kills while Hoppe had 10 kills and 14 digs. Ferry also had double-digit digs with ten. Walter had six kills to go with her two aces. Samantha Knepley (Munith, Mich./Stockbridge) and Mallory Gustincic (Medina, Ohio/Medina) combined for 35 assists.
The Storm wrap-up the season with a pair of road games at the University of Findlay and Wayne State University Friday and Saturday (Nov. 15-16).
