Storm Drops Battle With #21 Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Lake Erie College women's volleyball team concluded the non-conference portion of the schedule with a road matchup with the 21st-ranked Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals on Wednesday (Nov. 1) night.

Lake Erie won the first set but fell 3-1 (25-21, 10-25, 27-29, 16-25) to the Cardinals.

The Storm opened the match with a 3-0 lead off of three kills. The Cardinals closed the gap to 4-3 before the Storm responded with a 6-2 run and a 10-5 lead in the set. Wheeling Jesuit chipped away at the Storm's lead as they got within one point, 15-14. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) had two consecutive kills as Lake Erie forced a Cardinals timeout with a 4-1 run. The Storm led 19-15 at that point and went on to win the set 25-21.

Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry) had two kills and a block assist as the Storm led 4-2 early in the second set. The Cardinals pulled away with an 11-2 run and took the second set 25-10.

Following a 2-2 tie in the third set, Wheeling Jesuit used three straight points for a 5-2 lead. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) trimmed the lead to 5-4 with a kill for Lake Erie. The Cardinals maintained the lead, leading by as many as four before Lake Erie took a timeout. Wheeling Jesuit pushed the advantage to six late in the set. Lake Erie stormed back with a 5-0 run. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had two kills and a block assist as Lake Erie pulled within one at 22-21. Peiffer used a kill that tied the set at 24, the first tie since 2-2 in the set. The Storm fought off three set points but ultimately fell 29-27 in extra points for set three.

After the third set, the teams exchanged six ties in the first sixteen points. Lake Erie held an 8-7 lead, until the Cardinals regained the 12-8 lead with five straight points. A Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) service ace pulled the Storm within one but the Cardinals kept the pressure for a 25-16 set four win.

Lake Erie had four players in double figures for kills. Fisher led the Storm with 15 kills and three block assists on defense. Peiffer added a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs on the defensive end. Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) finished with 12 kills and three block assists. Rosebrook was the fourth in double digit kills, with ten along with three block assists.

Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) assisted on 29 points for Lake Erie and dug out a team-high 22 attacks. Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) had 22 assists and 12 digs on defense. Fletcher had the second highest dig total with 21 and Kedroske had 17 digs on the defensive front.

The Storm will return to the Osborne Center on Saturday (Nov. 4) evening for a conference match against Ursuline at 5:00 PM.
