PAINESVILLE, OHIO -- Sophomore Cody Lancaster (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) finished a strong fourth, covering the sloppy course in 27:08, to lead the Lake Erie College men's cross country team at the Penn State Behrend Invitational Saturday (Sept. 18) in Erie, Pa.
The Storm men placed seventh of 18 as a team. The LEC women, despite not having a runner individually in the top 15, finished two spots higher, in fifth in their team standings.
Thrust into the team's top spot a little earlier than expected due to injuries, Lancaster continued his strong early season start with his second top 10 finish in as many races. He was just six seconds off his personal best in the 8,000-meter race.
Freshman Nick Chlad (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) was Lake Erie's next finisher, running 28:03, good for 16th place. Sophomore Devin O'Neill (Concord, Ohio/Mentor) was the third Storm runner in the top 40, finishing 39th (28:56).
Junior Allison Wright (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) was the top women for the second straight meet. She placed 16th in the 5K race (21:09). Freshman Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) was 25th (21:49) and sophomore Samantha Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) was close behind in 27th (21:55).
Nineteen teams competed in the women's race, with 161 individual runners.
Next weekend the Storm will run at the annual Edinboro University Rag Relays on Saturday, Sept. 25.
