MIDLAND, MICH. – The Lake Erie College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Maple Leaf Golf Course in Linwood, Mich. The event was hosted by Northwood University.
The Storm men placed 14th of 15 teams while the women were 15th of 16 squads. Grand Valley State University won the team titles on both sides.
For Lake Erie, the top finisher on the men's side was freshman Nick Hall (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) who covered the 8,000-meter course in a school-record time of 25.38.4. His time was nearly 25 seconds better than the previous mark of 26:03.1. Junior Cody Lancaster (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North), the previous school record holder, was the Storm's next best finisher, finishing 60th in a time of 26:09.4. Senior Craig Gerber (Fremont, Ohio/Clyde) was close behind in 26:18.2 for 66th place.
On the women's side, Lake Erie's top runner was junior Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) in 24:37.2, ranking her 87th. She also became the first Lake Erie women's runner to break the 25-minute mark over the 6,000-meter course. The previous school record was 25:17.6, set by Allison Wright at the 2010 Division II Great Lakes Regional in Louisville, Ky.
Senior Sammie Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) finished 96th in a time of 25:12.9 and classmate Leah Jones (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) finished in 25:26.3, placing 98th.
