PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Lake Erie College has initiated a Mentorship Program between Lake Erie College athletics and Harvey High School. The program is a vision from Lake Erie College's president Brian Posler.
President Posler said, "I am delighted to see the relationship between Lake Erie College and Harvey High School grow in this direction. By pairing our successful Division II student-athletes as mentors to Harvey students, all involved will gain from the experience. Helping prepare high school students for their transition to college will have positive effects on their success as students, and whatever college they choose to attend will benefit."
The mentor/mentee pairing will work to enhance their current experience at Harvey High School plus their preparation for the transition after high school. The program will cover areas such as leadership, fiscal responsibility, nutrition and wellness, and time management skills. The Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), and the NCAA Leadership development will be providing content for the mentorship program.
Lake Erie College student-athletes from all 17 varsity sports and members of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will serve as mentors to the students at Harvey High School.
The mentorship will be a six week program as it began on Monday March 5th and runs through April 19th. The mentor and mentee will meet weekly. These interactions will take place at Harvey High School and Lake Erie College, and will be in be in the form of workshops, events, individual pairing work, and taking a trip to Classic Park to watch a Lake Erie College baseball game.
Lake Erie College's Director of Athletics Kelley Kish added, "We are excited to engage our local community through this mentorship program. Harvey High School students are our neighbors in Painesville and this will make a difference as they prepare for next steps after High School. Our student-athletes will live our Lake Erie mission of being empowered to lead lives of personal significance while fostering these strong mentoring relationships."
The program will have a culminating event to include a recognition ceremony for all participants at the end of the six weeks at Lake Erie College.
