CLEVELAND, MISS. – Third-ranked Delta State University proved to be a rude host Tuesday night (March 13), handing the Lake Erie College baseball team a 16-0 defeat in the series opener at Ferris Field.
The Statesmen (13-3) scored a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the first, then added three in the second and the third innings to break the game open early. Delta State, which banged out 18 hits in the game, scored at least two runs in each of the first five innings.
Jordan Moore (3-0) limited the Lake Erie (1-5) offense to just two hits in shutout five innings. He walked one, hit a batter and struck out six.
The Storm had three players record one hit. Senior Brayan Cacique (Caracas, Venezuela/John I. Leonard/Lakeland) and junior Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) each singled, while sophomore Reid Rizzo (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) doubled to extend his hitting streak to four games.
Junior Logan Nordquist (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) suffered the loss in his first start of the season. He lasted just two-plus innings, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits.
Freshman Cory Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) tossed a perfect sixth inning in his collegiate debut, including a strikeout to end the frame, retiring the Statesmen in order for the first, and only, time on the evening.
Brent Langston went 3-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Statesmen. Three other Delta State players had at least two hits, including Jonathan Andrews, who drove in four runs.
The two teams will wrap up their brief two-game set on Wednesday, March 14, at 2 p.m. local time, (3 p.m. EST).
