PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Behind a pair of strong starting pitching performance, the Lake Erie College baseball team wrapped up a four-game weekend series sweep of visiting Hillsdale College with two wins on Sunday (April 1). The Storm won game one 3-0 and took the nightcap 4-1.
The Storm (11-10, 7-1 GLIAC) has won seven of its last eight overall and moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season.
Junior Brian Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) was outstanding in the opener, tossing a two-hit shutout. He walked just three and struck out a season-high tying six. Kilway allowed just one batter to reach second base, and that was on a throwing error. That runner was subsequently doubled off by senior rightfielder Matt Toth (Lorain, Ohio/Admiral King).
It was Kilway's second complete game of the season and the first shutout of his career.
Offensively, the Storm got two hits apiece from sophomore Reid Rizzo (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) and senior Jae Leeworthy (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls). Lake Erie scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first on a double by senior Brayan Cacique (Caracas, Venezuela/John I. Leonard/Lakeland C.C.) that scored Rizzo who led off the inning with a single.
Rizzo singled in a run in the fourth and then senior Nick Lovick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) brought in a run with a base hit in the fifth.
Colin Gerish (0-2) pitched well, but suffered the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out five. Scott Lantis had both the Chargers' (3-19, 1-9 GLIAC) hits.
Sophomore Brad Raley (Hickley, Ohio/Highland) was nearly as good as Kilway in game two. After allowing a run in the first, he shut the Chargers down over the next five innings. Raley (1-1) threw six innings, allowing just the run on six hits. He walked three. Junior Doug Fox (Parma, Ohio/Valley Forge) closed out his third save with a scoreless seventh.
The Lake Erie offense, meanwhile, scored two in the bottom of the first. Cacique started it off with a blast to center field, his second home run of the season. Pat Kilway (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) scored the second run on a fielding error by shortstop Nolan Breymaier.
Up 2-1 in the third, the Storm scored two more. Kilway doubled down the left field line to score Toth and junior Zach Mosbarger (Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine) singled home Kilway to make it 4-1.
Kilway had two hits and scored twice in game two. Cacique's homer extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Lantis had two more hits for Hillsdale in game two while Breymaier also had two hits. Mike Blanchard scored the team's only run.
The Storm wraps up its eight-game homestand on Wednesday, April 4, with a GLIAC doubleheader against Ashland University. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
