PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team concluded their four-game series with a doubleheader sweep of Tiffin University Sunday (April 26).
The Storm won game one 2-0 and game two 10-4.
Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) led off the fourth with a double to right center. Sean Mathews (Washington, Mich./Warren De La Salle) moved to Birchmeier to third. After Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland), Aaron Lindgren (Willoughby, Ohio/Willoughby South) doubled down the right field line to bring both runners home.
The two runs proved to be all that the Storm needed, as Connor Fuller (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) pitched a gem, going the distance, allowing just three hits for the shutout.
Lindgren had two RBIs to lead the Storm offense. Birchmeier and Raley had runs.
Mathews reached base on an error in the opening frame. After advancing to third, he came home when Lindgren hit into an error to give the Storm the lead. After Lindgren stole second, Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) brought him home to increase the lead to two. Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) kept the inning alive with a single up the middle, bring Luebke home. Cale Giddings (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North/Akron) singled on a blooper to shallow left center to bring Peterlin around from second.
After Tiffin scored three, Birchmeier and Mathews led off the fifth with back-to-back singles. Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) hit a homerun to deep right field, bringing in both baserunners. Lindgren followed up DeCamp's homerun with a solo shot down the right field line.
With one out in the sixth, Birchmeier singled to right field. Mathews followed up with a double, bringing Birchmeier around from first to extend the lead to six. Lindgren hit a deep double to right field, scoring Mathews from second.
David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) picked up the win, going six innings, allowing four hits and one run.
Birchmeier had two hits and two runs. Mathews came across the plate three times and had two hits and a RBI. DeCamp and Lindgren had three RBIs apiece. Lindgren also had two runs. Luebke had one hit, one run and one RBI. Peterlin had two hits, one run and one RBI. Giddings had a hit and a RBI.
The Storm is back in action Tuesday (April 28) at home against Ashland University.
