NASHVILLE – The Lake Erie College baseball team fell in a pair of games to Rockhurst University Saturday (Feb. 27) in neutral site games in Nashville.
Rockhurst won game one 4-2 and game two 2-1.
The Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the second off of a homerun.
In the third, Ben Szymczak (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) singled to left field, scoring Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf). Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) brought Szymczak home later in the inning off a single to left.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks added one more run. In the final innings of the game, they kept the Storm off the board to pick up the win.
Szymczak went two-of-three with a RBI and a run. Carver had one run and one hit in two at bats. Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) and Kody Bledsoe (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) had two hits apiece.
Neither team got on the board until the bottom of the fourth, when the Hawks plated a pair of runs.
In the top of the seventh, Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) scored Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half but it was not enough to overcome to Hawks advantage.
Birchmeier led the Storm offense with a pair of hits. Raley, DeCamp and Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) also recorded hits.
David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) went the distance for the Storm on the mound, allowing just four hits and two earned runs while fanning eight.
The Storm and Hawks meet Sunday (Feb. 28) for another doubleheader.
