PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team was in action today in a GLIAC double-header against Saginaw Valley St. The Storm dropped their first game, and the second game was postponed due to weather.
In game one, the Cardinals opened the scoring in the top of the first as they plated two runs to take a 2-0 advantage. Saginaw Valley tacked on two more runs in the second to expand their lead to 4-0. The Cardinals tallied a run in the third and one more in the fourth to take a 6-0 advantage. The Cardinals added five runs in the top of the fifth before the Storm got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Ryan Grieco (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) started the inning with a double to the left field gap and Damian Maglione (Uniontown, Ohio / Lake (Uniontown) and Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y. / McQuaid Jesuit) each reached to load the bases. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) drove home Grieco on a ground out. The next batter, Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio / Medina Highland), singled down the left field line and drove home both Maglione and Bovenzi. The Cardinals responded with a run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 12-3. The Storm scored in the bottom of the sixth when Rua singled to drive home Maglione and Bovenzi was later driven in by a Raley single, to cut the Cardinals lead to 12-5. The Storm could not rally in the seventh and fell in game one by a score of 12-5.
The Storm and the Cardinals begin the second game of their double header but were unable to complete the day due to weather. The Storm leads the Cardinals 18-10 as they will resume play in the bottom of the seventh inning. The game will resume at 10 A.M. tomorrow morning.
After the conclusion of game two in the morning, Lake Erie and Saginaw Valley will continue with their regularly scheduled double-header.
