ASHLAND, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team fell in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader at Ashland University Wednesday (April 13).
The Eagles won game one 15-5 and game two 14-7.
Ryan Grieco (Murrsville, Pa./Franklin Regional) singled to center field to lead off the game. After Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) moved him to third on a sac bunt, Lucas Raley (Medina, Ohio/Highland) brought him home with a double.
However, the Eagles took control of the game, scoring 15 runs heading into the top of the seventh.
The Storm fought back in the top of the seventh. Nico DiIanni (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) earned a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jake Csizmadia (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) hit a pinch hit single to left field. Tyler Bires (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain) hit into a fielder's choice, bringing DiIanni home. Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf) singled to right field, moving Bires to third. Grieco followed with a RBI single to left field, scoring Bires. Dalton Davis (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) earned a walk, loading the bases. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) hit an infield single, scoring Carver. Tyler Hissom (Chippewa Lake, Ohio/Cloverleaf) was then walked, bringing Grieco home. However, the Eagles recorded the final two outs to close the game.
Grieco led the Storm with three hits, two runs and a RBI. Rua, Bires and Hissom had a RBI.
The Eagles scored seven runs before the Storm got on the board in the fifth.
Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) led off the fifth with a single. After Grieco earned a walk, Williams singled down the left field line, scoring Bovenzi and moving Grieco to third. Grieco came across the plate on a Raley groundout, cutting the lead to five. After Zak DeCamp (Gahanna, Ohio/St. Francis De Sales) was walked, he came home on an error. However, the Eagles plated seven runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 11.
The Storm got back to work in the seventh. Alex Lind (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Elder) was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Michael Poole (Kent, Ohio/Field) was walked, Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf) singled to load the bases. Bires earned a walk, bringing Lind home. Poole scored on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Rua loaded the bases for the Storm once again after getting hit by a pitch. Damian Maglione (Uniontown, Ohio/Lake) hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Carver. During the next at-bat, Bires scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Eagle lead to seven.
However, the game was called in the bottom of the seventh due to darkness.
Seven different Storm players recorded hits. Carver and Bovenzi had a hit and a run each. Williams, Bires and Maglione had one RBI apiece.
The Storm is back in action this weekend for a four-game series at Wayne State University.
