PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College baseball team returned to Painesville for a rematch against Ashland University Wednesday (April 20).
The Eagles won game one 7-2 and game two 11-6.
The Eagles struck first with a solo homerun in the second.
Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle) led off the second with a double to right field but the Storm was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
The Eagles offense continued to produce, scoring four runs between the third and fifth inning to increase their lead to 5-0.
Lucas Raley (Hinckley, Ohio/Medina Highland) doubled in the bottom of the sixth but once again the Storm was unable to capitalize.
The Eagles added two in the top of the seventh inning.
Nico DiIanni (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. Ben Szymczak (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) followed up with a single to right field. Kody Bledsoe (Elyria, Ohio/Amherst Steele) singled through the left side, scoring DiIanni from second and putting runners at second and third. Austin Bovenzi (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) grounded out to third but brought Szymczak home and moved DiIanni to third. However, the Eagles were able to close out the game to hold on for the win.
Grieco and Bledsoe had two hits apiece. Williams and Raley hit doubles. Bledsoe and Bovenzi provided the Storm's RBI.
After a scoreless first, Louie Peterlin (Mentor, Ohio/Lake Catholic) led off the second with a single. Bledsoe moved him to third with a one-out single to left center. Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) brought Peterlin home with a hit to center field, giving the Storm the lead. Dalton Davis (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) hit into an error, bringing Bledsoe home. However, the Eagles tied it in the bottom of the frame.
In the third, Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg) reached via error. Raley followed up with a double to right center, bringing Birchmeier home from first and giving the Storm the lead back. Williams singled up the middle, scoring Raley from second and extending the lead to two. In the top of the fourth, the Eagles responded with seven runs to take the lead.
The Eagles added two more in the eighth.
Bovenzi led off the eighth with an infield single. After Raley was walked, the two moved up on a wild pitch. With two outs, Rutger Luebke (Medina, Ohio/Medina) singled through the left side, scoring two. However, the Eagles closed out the inning.
The game was called after eight innings due to darkness.
Raley led the Storm with two hits, two hits and a RBI. Luebke had a pair of RBI.
The Storm is back in action this weekend as they host Ohio Dominican University in a four-game series.
