Storm Drops Doubleheader Against Railsplitters

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lake Erie College baseball team opened the 2018 season on Sunday (Feb. 18) with a doubleheader against the Lincoln Memorial University Railsplitters at Hennon Field.

The Storm fell 11-2 in the opener and dropped the nightcap 3-1.

GAME ONE

The opener was scoreless through the first four innings as both teams worked around some traffic on the base paths.

Lake Erie broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Caleb Waller (Vermilion, Ohio / Vermilion) opened the inning with a single to right field. Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea-Midpark) followed with a RBI triple to right field, scoring Waller from first. After a flyout, Corbin Paxton (Sylvania, Ohio / Sylvania Northview) plated Erzen with a groundout to second base.

The Railsplitters tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lincoln Memorial scored three runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning for the 11-2 final score.

Waller had two hits for the Storm in the first game as four other players each had a hit. David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) allowed two runs on two hits in 4.2 innings. He walked two and struck out four in his first start of the year.

GAME TWO

Lincoln Memorial gained an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Storm tied the game in the top of the fourth with a run. With two outs, Erzen moved Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) to third base with an infield single. Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) followed with a single through the left side for his first collegiate hit and RBI. Williams scored from third, tying the game at one.

The Railsplitters gained a 3-1 advantage with two runs in the fifth inning. That was the final score of the nightcap.

Peterson had two hits in his first collegiate game. Michael Stryffeler allowed three runs in 4.2 innings, with six hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Brian Bullock (Loveland, Ohio / Loveland) threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Lake Erie and Lincoln Memorial will conclude the three game series with a single game on Monday (Feb. 19) at 2:00 PM.
