Storm Sweeps Doubleheader With Senators

EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team continued Great Midwest play with a doubleheader against the Davis & Elkins College Senators on Sunday (March 25) at Classic Park.

The Storm rallied late for a 4-2 win in game one. In the nightcap, Lake Erie scored six runs in the first two innings in a 9-6 win.

GAME ONE

Lake Erie scored first in the top of the first with a run on a Senators error. Forrest Longeway (Cincinnati, Ohio / Walnut Hills) led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when the first baseman overthrew third base as Longeway tried to advance.

The Senators tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and took the lead with a run in the seventh.

The Storm tied the game at two in the top of the eighth. Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) singled with two outs in the inning, before being lifted for a pinch runner, Jacob Armstrong (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston). Armstrong stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Wes Birchmeier (Miamisburg, Ohio / Miamisburg) plated Armstrong with a RBI single.

Lake Erie scored two runs in the top of the ninth, taking a 4-2 advantage. Nathan Erzen (Brookpark, Ohio / Berea Midpark) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Jacob Lozinski (Avon, Ohio / St. Edward's) pinch ran for Erzen and moved to second when Brady Minetti (Mckees Rock, Pa. / Montour) reached on an error. With two outs, Armstrong lifted a fly ball down the left field line. The Senators left fielder could not complete the catch as both runners scored.

Brad Curry (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton) escaped a jam in the bottom of the ninth and ended the game with the tying run at first base. Lake Erie won the opener 4-2.

Birchmeier had two hits as the Storm managed five hits on the day.

David Lemasters (Cortland, Ohio / Lakeview) pitched seven strong innings with two runs allowed on five hits. He walked two and struck out ten batters for the third time this season. Curry earned the win with two scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Lake Erie jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Longeway was hit with the first pitch of the game and Peterson followed with a single. Two batters later, Rees Rua (Amherst, Ohio / Amherst Steele) plated both runners with a two-run double down the left field line. Rua stole third base and crossed the plate on a RBI single by Ryan Carver (Orange Park, Fla. / Oakleaf).

The Storm put a three spot on the scoreboard in the second inning. Nathan Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the frame with a single and stole second base. He scored from second base when the Senators second baseman failed to immediately field a single. After a single, Rua drilled a two-run double to deep centerfield as Lake Erie led 6-0.

Davis & Elkins cut into the lead with single runs in the second, third and sixth innings.

A three run seventh inning sealed the Storm's victory. Birchmeier led off with a triple to right center field. A passed ball plated Birchmeier from third. Carver singled before Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) and Birtley each had a RBI triple. Lake Erie led 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Senators scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh but the Storm swept the doubleheader with a 9-6 second game win.

Evan Layne (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Telecommunications) allowed one earned run in six innings. He gave up three runs total on ten hits with a season-high ten strikeouts.

Birtley, Carver and Peterson all had three hits each as the Storm piled up 14 hits. Birchmeier and Rua had two apiece.

The Storm will return to Classic Park on Monday (March 26) for a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus, starting at 1:00 PM.
