EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College baseball team completed a Great Midwest doubleheader on Monday (March 26) against the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers at Classic Park.
The Storm used ten runs in the final two innings to defeat the Battlers 13-5 in game one. Lake Erie scored two runs in the top of the seventh to rally for a 6-4 second game victory.
Lake Erie started the game with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Nigel Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio / La Salle) reached on a fielder's choice after an inning-opening single. Williams stole second and scored on a RBI single by Blake Curry (Eaton, Ohio / Eaton).
Michael Stryffeler (Sagamore Hills, Ohio / Padua) pitched seven shutout innings for the Storm. He scattered two hits, after throwing five no-hit innings. He walked one and struck out 13 Battler batters.
In the eighth inning, Lake Erie scored seven runs as they made it 10-0. Williams opened the inning with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to third when Bl. Curry reached on a fielding error. Brady Minetti (Mckees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) singled home Williams before Bl. Curry stole home on a delayed double steal. After a walk, Trace Peterson (Medina, Ohio / Medina) singled home Minetti for the third run of the inning. A hit batter loaded the bases after a Battlers pitching change. Carver cleared the bases with a three-run double to deep left field. Carver crossed the plate on an error to close the scoring.
The Battlers trimmed the lead to 10-4 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Lake Erie responded with a three spot in the top of the ninth. After Minetti and Bl. Curry walked, Peterson drilled his sixth homerun of the season to the bleachers in left field. Peterson's three-run blast made it 13-4 Lake Erie.
Alderson Broaddus added a run in the bottom of the ninth as the Storm won the opener 13-5.
Peterson went four-of-six with four RBI and three runs scored. Carver had three hits and four RBI of his own. The Storm totaled 12 hits in the first game.
After two scoreless innings, Lake Erie broke through with three runs in the third inning. Minetti reached on a single and advanced to second base on an error. Minetti came around to score on another error. Peterson launched his second homerun of the day to the left field bleachers as two runs came home.
Ryan Middendorf (West Chester, Ohio / Lakota East) made his first start of the year. Middendorf pitched five shutout innings with three hits allowed and five strikeouts.
The Storm added a run in the sixth inning off of a wild pitch, as they led 4-0.
Alderson Broaddus tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Lake Erie regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Nathan Birtley (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) led off with a fly ball that the second baseman could not feel cleanly. Peterson walked to put two runners on base. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. Birchmeier plated Birtley with a sacrifice fly to right field. Carver added an insurance run with a RBI single. The Storm won the nightcap 6-4.
Minetti had two of the Storm's five hits with a run scored. Peterson scored twice, walked twice and drove in two runs in the game.
Chris Mutter (Cleves, Ohio / Taylor) earned his second win of the year with one run allowed in two innings of relief work.
The Storm will return to Classic Park for a doubleheader on Friday (March 30) against Kentucky Wesleyan at 1:00 PM.
