COLUMBUS, Ohio – Big plays led to 41 answered points for a ranked Ohio Dominican squad, as Lake Erie fell to the Panthers, 62-21, on Saturday.
The No. 8 (D2Football.com) Panthers remained unbeaten on the season (9-0, 8-0 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) by notching season highs in points and total yards (727) on a sunny, windy day in Central Ohio. The Storm (3-7, 2-6) was held off the scoreboard for over 40 minutes of game play by an ODU defense that went into the contest yielding just 16.4 points per game. LEC was held 92 rushing yards over the 60-minute tilt at Ohio Dominican's Panther Field.
A balance-and-big-play attack led the Panthers to posting 345 rushing and 382 passing yards in a game that marked ODU's 14th consecutive win dating back to the 2012 season. Ohio Dominican is now 4-1 all-time against the Storm.
The Panthers got on the board quickly in the first quarter, scoring at the 13:57-mark. Lake Erie answered two ODU scores at the 4:08-mark when wide receiver Andrew Schickler caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Gallagher. Schickler would go on to record season-highs in receptions (six) and yards (109), and Gallagher would go on to complete 29 passes in 43 attempts for 303 yards, but for the most part a high-octane LEC offense was hemmed in by a fast and hard-hitting ODU defense.
A big second quarter on both sides of the ball sent the home side into halftime leading, 41-14. With an early lead established, Ohio Dominican effectively pressured Gallagher throughout the balance of the game, and the Panther offense came through with 13 plays of 20 yards-plus. ODU's big plays included three touchdown passes of 40 or more yards and a 66-yard TD run.
Lake Erie's three trips to the end zone came courtesy two Gallagher TD passes and an Anthony Bilal TD run. LEC also came up empty in two trips to the red zone.
