PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College football team fell at home to the University of Findlay, 58-13, Saturday (Sept. 24) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.
The Oilers controlled the pace of the opening half, finding the end zone five times through the passing game. The Storm blocked the final extra point attempt of the first quarter but trailed 34-0 heading into the locker room.
After the Oilers added a touchdown six minutes into the second half, the Storm offense struck. On first down at their own 20, John Banyasz (Columbia Station, Ohio/Columbia Station) found Jonathan Bell (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) deep downfield, who outran the defender to score on an 80-yard strike. Austin Baker (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde) converted the extra-point attempt.
The Oilers connected on a 22-yard field goal late in the third to extend their lead to 44-7.
In the fourth quarter, the Oilers added two rushing touchdowns to move ahead, 58-7. In the final minute of the game, Chris Collins (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) broke through the Findlay defensive front and took out from midfield to inside the five yard line. On the next play, he punched it in from three-yards out for his first career touchdown. However, it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Banyasz led the Storm with 172 passing yards and a touchdown. Bell led the Storm receivers with 89 yards and a touchdown on three catches. Javarian Smith (Pontiac, Mich./Oakland Christian) went six-of-six passing for 61 yards. Demarco Rojas (Owings, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) caught a team-high seven passes for 61 yards.
