PAINESVILLE, Ohio—The Lake Erie College men's basketball team's comeback fell just short against Wayne State University Thursday (Feb. 11) as the Warriors won 63-60 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division action.
The Warriors got off to a fast start, jumping out to a 12-2 lead at the first media timeout. Following the timeout, the Storm heated up and went on an 11-6 run, highlighted by four points by Steve Walczak (Columbus, Ohio/Olentangy), to cut the lead to 18-15.
After the second media timeout, the Warriors maintained their five point lead for the next seven minutes. Late in the half, the Warriors lead grew to nine, 35-26, before an Andy Bosley (Columbus, Ohio/Orange) three cut the lead to six. Bosley then hit a tough layup in traffic, bringing the score to 35-31 heading into the break.
Sean Howard (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the Storm with seven points in the opening half. Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio/Highland) had five rebounds while Walczak grabbed three offensive rebounds. The Storm outrebounded the Warriors 15-14.
The Warriors increased their lead to 40-33 in the opening five minutes of the second half. After the media timeout, the Storm went on a 4-0 to bring the game within three points and forcing and Warriors timeout.
After their timeout, the Warriors came out strong, going on an 8-0 run before the Storm answered with four straight points midway through the half.
The teams went back-and-forth over the next five minutes as the Warriors maintained their seven point lead, 59-52, with five minutes to play. They increased their lead to 61-52 after the final media timeout.
Trailing by nine, the Storm put together a 6-0 run to bring the game within three, 61-58. After the Warriors called a timeout, Trey Howard (Lima, Ohio/Lima Shawnee) hit a tough shot to bring the game within one with less than thirty seconds to play.
The Storm fouled the Warriors on the inbound pass as they brought the lead back up to three after converting both free-throw opportunities.
The final possession of the game went to the Storm. As time expired, Sean Howard's three fell just short as the Warriors hung on for the win.
Bosley led the Storm with 11 points and a pair of blocks and rebounds. Sean Howard ended the game with 10 points and two rebounds. Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind./New Palestine) and Trey Howard had seven points apiece. Scott had a team-high six rebounds to go with his six points. Nick Wells (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary's) also had six points.
The Storm outscored the Warriors in the paint 30-12. The bench of the Storm outscored their counterparts 21-9. The Storm committed just six turnovers while forcing 12. Both teams ended with 30 rebounds.
Lake Erie is at home Saturday (Feb. 13) for their final home game of the season, playing host to the University of Findlay on Senior Day.
