PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College men's basketball team was defeated by the Davis & Elkins College Senators 69-66 on Tuesday (Jan. 30) night at the Osborne Center.
Brogan Scott (Wadsworth, Ohio / Highland) scored five of the Storm's first seven points as Lake Erie opened the contest with a 7-2 run. Scott added a three pointer two minutes later as Lake Erie led 12-7 at the first media timeout of the game. Michael Morris (New Palestine, Ind. / New Palestine) made a three pointer as a part of the Storm's 5-0 run out of the timeout. Lake Erie held a 17-7 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. Davis & Elkins responded with four straight points before Morris drilled his second three pointer of the night. Lake Erie led 20-11 as the Senators called a timeout. Over the next three minutes, the Senators tied the game at 20 heading into the under eight media timeout. Harrison Riggs (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) scored off of a Scott steal and then assisted on a David Dunnigan (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua) layup as Lake Erie regained a 24-21 lead with seven minutes left in the half. The Senators tied the game until Mitch Loomis (Malvern, Ohio / Malvern) gave the Storm a 26-24 lead at the under four media timeout. Over the final 4:38 of the half, Lake Erie closed the half with a 13-4 run. Gabe Kynard (Toledo, Ohio / St. John's) scored five points on the run as Lake Erie led 39-28 at halftime.
Lake Erie scored the first four points of the half before Davis & Elkins trimmed the lead to three with a run over the next two minutes. Kynard stopped the run with a three pointer that pushed the Storm's lead to 46-40. Jordan Humphrey (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville South) scored two straight layups as the Storm led by ten. The Senators cut the Storm's lead to four at the under twelve media timeout. Humphrey came out of the media timeout and drained a three pointer, giving the Storm a 53-46 lead with 11:30 to go. The Senators closed the gap to five but the Storm led 57-50 at the under eight media timeout. With 6:20 left, Erron James (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville Central) made a three pointer that opened an eight point advantage for the Storm, 62-54. Davis & Elkins chipped away at the lead as Lake Erie led 62-60 at the final media timeout. The Senators took the lead in the final seconds with two free throws and defeated the Storm 69-66.
Kynard led the Storm with 15 points while Scott scored 12 points. Morris made three three pointers as he chipped in 11 points off of the bench. Lamont Rhodes (Bedford, Ohio / Bedford) scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots. Riggs assisted on a career-high six baskets with six rebounds.
The Storm will host Ohio Valley on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon, with the tip occurring at 1:00 PM.
