(INDIANAPOLIS) – A week after he scored a career-high 30 points and his 1,000th career point, Gabe Kynard has been named the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week. The junior guard had averages of 25 points and eight rebounds per game while shooting 55.6 percent from the field in wins over Cedarville and Tiffin.
He joins teammate Jordan Humphrey as the only two Lake Erie players to earn G-MAC Athlete of the Week honors. Humphrey did so the week of December 18, 2017 last season.
Against the Yellow Jackets, Kynard sparked the Storm rally with 22 of his game-high 24 points coming after halftime in a 91-87 overtime win. He added three 3-pointers, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals to the cause as well.
His performance against the Dragons was just as impressive as he recorded his first double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Kynard was 11-of-20 overall from the field with a pair of triples.
Kynard has been the Storm's top scorer in 12 games this season and is averaging 18.8 points per game, the third-best mark in the G-MAC. He's also in the top five in steals at No. 4 with 1.7 per game.
Kynard and the Storm are currently on a four-game win streak and will close out a five-game home stand this week with games against Malone and Walsh. Through that streak he has averaged 22.75 points per game and shot 55.7 percent from the field.
The Pioneers will be the first to visit the Osborne Center and will do so Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
