(PAINESVILLE, Ohio) – Lake Erie's four-game win streak was snapped at the hands of an upstart Malone team by a score 67-64 on Thursday evening. The loss dropped the Storm to 10-7 overall and 5-4 in the G-MAC, while the Pioneers upped their mark to 10-7 and 5-5 in the same categories.
The game was competitive throughout with neither team holding a lead of more than eight points, and that scoring difference came less than five minutes into the game. That advantage was held by Malone, but Lake Erie answered with the next eight points to tie the game.
The teams battled back and forth until Malone took the lead on a pair of free throws with just under six minutes left. The Storm was able to keep the score within two possessions, but time ran out on Lake Erie despite a buzzer-beating triple by Jordan Humphrey.
Lamont Rhodes had an impressive game as he led the team with 12 points off the bench. He was 6-of-10 from the field and pulled down nine rebounds. Defensively he was a menace for Malone as well with four blocked shots on the night. Gabe Kynard joined him in double-figures with 11 points.
The Pioneers were paced by Nate Sheppard who tallied 24 on 9-of-17 from the field.
The Storm now preps for a short turnaround with another Stark County college as Walsh visits Saturday. Because of impending weather, tip-off with the Cavaliers has been moved up to 1 p.m. following an earlier tip of 11 a.m. in the women's game.
