OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sixth-ranked New York Institute of Technology scored three second-half goals to break a 5-5 tie and record an 8-5 victory over the Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team in the East Coast Conference (ECC) opener for both teams on Saturday (March 3).
Junior Josh Becker (Salamanca, N.Y./Salamanca) tied the game at 5-5 with 6:47 remaining in the third period, but the host Bears (4-1, 1-0 ECC) scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to prevent the Storm (1-1, 0-1 ECC) from its second-straight upset of a top-10 team.
Sophomore Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, Sask./Bishop Jones Mahoney) scored three times in the first half for Lake Erie and assisted on a goal by classmate MacGregor Johnston (Nanaimo, B.C./Dover Bay), but the Storm, which scored the first two goals of the game, trailed 5-4 at halftime.
Harding finished with four points on the day and Johnston finished with three. Becker had an assist to go along with his goal, but the Storm was kept off the scoreboard for the final 21 minutes of the game. Junior goalkeeper Alexander Wisner (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) made seven saves .
Cory Triola and Luke Miller each scored twice for NYIT and Bobby Calhoun had three assists to help the Bears to their second straight win. Billy McGee made three saves in goal.
The Storm is idle until traveling to Lenoir-Rhyne University on Wednesday, March 14, as part of the team's spring break trip for a nonconference game in Hickory, N.C.
