Second Half Surge Lifts Storm Over Lindenwood, 13-8

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—A nine goal second half lifted the third-ranked Lake Erie College lacrosse team to a 13-8 win over Lindenwood University in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) play Saturday (April 18).

The Lions got on the board first in the opening frame.  After a defensive stalemate, Courtland Black-Araujo (Bowmanville, Ont./St. Stephen Secondary/Onondaga CC) scored with less than 10 seconds to go in the quarter to even it up.

Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) gave the Storm a 2-1 lead in the second off a pass by Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon).  After the Lions tied the game once again, Shafer scored a man-up goal on an assist from Reagan Harding (Saskatoon, Sask./Bishop James Mahoney).  The Lions answered with three straight goals to gain a two goal edge.  Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored midway through the second to cut the lead to one heading into the half.

The Storm came out strong in the second half.  Lucas Shafer, Justin Goodwin and Mitchell Shafer scored three straight to regain the lead for the Storm, 7-5.  After a Lions goal, Harding found Mitch Redmond (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) for a goal.  The Lions answered, but Lucas Shafer netted his third to give the Storm a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth.

Shafer scored his fourth four minutes into the final frame.  Black-Araujo found Robert Pelkey (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Finger Lakes CC) for a goal to bring the lead to 11-7.  Harding netted his first goal of the game off a pass by Lucas Shafer, followed by a Mitchell Shafer goal assisted by Black-Araujo to give the Storm a six goal lead.  The Lions added a goal in the final minute but it was not enough to overcome the Storm lead.

Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) picked up the win in net, making four saves.

Mitchell and Lucas Shafer scored four goals apiece.  Lucas Shafer also added an assist.  Harding and Black-Araujo each had one goal to go with two assists.  Goodwin, Pelkey and Mitch Redmond had one goal apiece while Donohue had an assist.

Goodwin cleaned up on ground balls, collecting 14 while causing three turnovers.  Zach Bruening (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) caused two turnovers while collecting two groundballs.  Kole Robinson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) had three groundballs and a caused turnover.

Harding and Teddy Ferguson (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) went a combined 10-of-15 on faceoffs.

The Storm is back in action April 24 to conclude ECAC play at Walsh University.
