ERIE, Pa.—The ninth-ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team fell to fifth-ranked Mercyhurst University 12-4 Saturday (April 23) in ECAC play.
The Lakers struck first, five minutes into the game. Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) responded for the Storm two minutes later off an assist by Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont./Waterdown District/Pfieffer). The defenses took over the rest of the quarter, sending the game into the second tied at one.
Early in the second, the Lakers regained the lead. Four minutes later, Lucas Shafer found Mitchell Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) for the tying goal. However, the Lakers scored four straight goals to gain control. In the final seconds of the second quarter, Lucas Shafer found the back of the net off an assist by Mitchell Shafer to cut the lead to 6-2 at the half.
The Lakers kept the Storm off the board in the third as they added two goals to their lead heading into the final frame.
Mercyhurst added two more goals early in the fourth before Lucas Shafer broke up the Laker run with an unassisted goal. However, the Lakers added two more goals to seal the win.
Lucas Shafer led the Storm with three goals and one assist. Mitchell Shafer had a goal while Renaud had an assist.
Brandon Donohue (South Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon St. Jude) led the Storm defense, causing three turnovers while picking up a groundball. Tyler Smoot (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) caused two turnovers had picked up a groundball.
Tom Lipomi (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) started in net, making seven saves.
The Storm concludes the regular season at home next Sunday (May 1) against Wheeling Jesuit University.
