DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The #9 Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team withheld a late rally by the #11 Mercy College Mavericks by scoring the game-winning goal in overtime on Saturday (April 21) afternoon on the road.
The Storm won the game 12-11 in overtime on a goal by John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass. / Malden Catholic) with 1:39 remaining.
Mercy opened the game with a goal less than 90 seconds into the contest. Three minutes later, Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) responded with an unassisted goal, tying the game at one. Both defenses held each other scoreless as it was 1-1 after one quarter.
Three minutes into the second quarter, Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) gave an assist to Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy) on a man up opportunity as the Storm took a 2-1 lead. With under ten minutes left in the half, Mercy tied the game with a goal. Just eight seconds after, Bret Swan (Acton City, Ont. / Halton Hills) won the draw and quickly scored a goal for Lake Erie. One minute later, Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) scored on an assist from Renaud as Lake Erie led 4-2. Mercy trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a man up goal with six minutes left in the first half. Bishop and Shafer added an unassisted goal each in the final six minutes as Lake Erie held a 6-3 lead at the half.
Shafer gave the Storm a four goal advantage three minutes into the third quarter with his second goal of the day. The Mavericks scored two straight goals as they cut the lead in half with 8:42 left in the third. Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) scored on an assist from Bishop with 7:33 left in the quarter. Mercy scored two straight goals before Shafer responded with 1:37 left as Lake Erie held a 9-7 lead going to the fourth.
After a five minute scoreless period in the fourth, Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C. / New Westminster Secondary) made it 10-7 in favor of the Storm with an unassisted goal. The Mavericks continued to chip away at the lead with two goals in a five minute span. With 1:40 to go, Daigle scored his second goal of the day as Lake Erie led 11-9. Mercy scored twice in the final minute to force overtime.
Lake Erie controlled the pace for the overtime period as they held the ball until Kezerian was able to get past the keeper for the overtime winner.
Shafer led the Storm with three goals while Bishop and Daigle each scored two goals.
Alex Corbett (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Bishop Timon) led the Storm with eight groundballs while Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) grabbed six groundballs and forced a team-high five turnovers. Swan won 15 faceoffs with six groundballs. Liam Smith (Webster, N.Y. / Aquinas Institute) had five groundballs on defense.
Lake Erie returns to the Britt on Wednesday (April 25) for Senior Night against Roberts Wesleyan at 7:00 PM.
