PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The #9 ranked Lake Erie College men's lacrosse team was in action today as they defeated Roberts Wesleyan, 20-5 on Senior Day. With the win the Storm is 11-2 overall on the season.
The Storm jumped out to an early 1-0 as Edmond Renaud (Carlisle, Ont. / Waterdown District / Pfeiffer) found the back of the net on an unassisted goal less than a minute into the game. Two and a half minutes later Lake Erie tacked on a second straight goal when Micah Daigle (Erie, Pa. / McDowell) scored off a feed from Lucas Shafer (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg). The Redhawks stopped the Storm run, and cut the Lake Erie lead to 2-1. A minute later Nicholas Tschetter (Hilton, N.Y. / Aquanis Institute) scored off an assist from Shafer. Two minutes later Shafer gave Lake Erie a 4-1 edge as he scored an unassisted goal, and the Storm entered the second quarter up, 4-1.
The Storm momentum carried over to the second quarter as Shafer scored off a feed from Austin Bishop (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) to give Lake Erie a 5-1 edge. A minute later Bishop found the back of the net from an assist by Shafer. Shafer scored back to back goals, and gave Lake Erie an 8-1 edge with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Less than a minute later Renaud gave the Storm a 9-1 advantage. After the Redhwaks tacked on a goal, Lake Erie closed the half with a goal by Tim Bay (Canadaigua, N.Y. / Canadaigua Academy), and entered the intermission ahead 10-2.
The Storm came out of the locker room ready to play as they scored four goals in the third quarter. The Storm goals were scored by Renaud, Connor Ward (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston), Shafer, and Tschetter. The four consecutive goals provided the Storm with a 14-2. The Storm defense pitched a shutout in the third, and entered the fourth quarter ahead, 14-2.
The Storm continued to pull away as they scored the opening four goals of the fourth quarter. The goals were scored by Mitchell Stokes (New Westminster, B.C. / New Westminster Secondary), Ward, John Kezerian (Melrose, Mass. / Malden Catholic), and Renaud. After back to back goals by Roberts Wesleyan, Hunter Hays (Plain City, Ohio / St. Francis DeSales) scored, and made the score 19-4 in favor of the Storm. The Redhawks scored a goal to make the score, 19-5 but the Storm responded when Kobe Wright (Hamburg, New York / Hamburg) scored the final goal of the game off an assist from Neil Gardner (Buffalo, N.Y. / Bishop Timon). The Storm won the game, 20-5.
The Storm was led by Shafer as he had five goals, and four assists in the game. Renaud pitched in with four goals and an assist in the game. 11 members of the Storm scored on the night for the Storm. The defense was led by Reed Hnidy (Saskatoon, Sask. / Genesee CC) as he caused five turnovers, and two groundballs.
Lake Erie will return to the field Thursday (May 3) when they travel to play in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Semifinal match.
