PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Despite owning a 17-16 advantage in shots, Lake Erie College (1-1) could not convert enough opportunities in a 4-1 loss to Malone University (1-0) at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium in Painesville, Ohio .
The Pioneers got on the board first in the 12th minute as Felipe Delgado found Kelvin Aquino ahead of the Lake Erie defense with Aquino finishing the play. That would be all for the scoring in the first half as the two teams were evenly matched in possession.
Just four minutes into the second half, Malone got a critical second goal on a Josh Abend header coming off a Stephen Wannah free kick. The Storm stayed resilient and got on the board 72nd minute when sophomore Nathan Bias (Dayton, Ohio/Kettering Fairmont) scored his second goal in as many games. The one goal deficit was short lived as Abend scored from Aquino at 78:02 to give Malone a 3-1 advantage. The Pioneers' Rubern Miranda tacked on an insurance goal late for the final 4-1 edge.
In goal, junior Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) made five saves for Lake Erie.
Each team put nine shots on goal in a match which was closer than the final score indicated.
The Storm will continue this four-game homestand on Friday with its GLIAC opener against the University of Findlay at 7:30 p.m.
