PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College freshman Cory Bucur (Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) netted a pair of goals and they were the difference in a 3-1 victory over the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.
The win moved the Storm to 8-7-2 overall and 5-4-2 in the GLIAC while the Oilers fell to 3-12-1 (1-9-1 GLIAC). It was a big victory as it kept Lake Erie in the driver's seat for the fourth and final playoff spot in next week's GLIAC Tournament, after the team on its heels, Tiffin University, picked up its own 3-1 victory over Ashland University today.
Lake Erie and Tiffin will square off Sunday at 3:00 p.m. down in Tiffin. Today's victory means the Storm needs a win or tie in that contest to secure the final playoff berth. Tiffin needs to win outright to punch a ticket to the playoffs.
The Storm struck first in the 13th minute on a beautiful individual effort from Bucur as he found the bottom left corner of the goal from 30 yards out. Just before half, at 42:29, the Oilers evened things with a similar goal from Kyle Pahren.
Lake Erie regained the lead just 2:25 into the second half as some nifty work in the box by junior Randy Danso (Toronto, Canada/North Count Community College) set up sophomore Danny Eborall (Sheffield, England/Averett University) for his team-high seventh goal of the season. Bucur put the clincher on the festivities in the 89th minute from 20 yards out.
Findlay outshot Lake Erie in the contest 16-11 and had a 7-4 edge with shots on goal. However, junior Ricky Carreira (Toronto, Ont./Dante Alighieri Academy) was strong in the Storm goal with six saves.
