PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College softball team was defeated today (April 6th) by Wayne St. in their double header. With the losses the Storm falls to 7-13 overall and 1-7 in the conference, and with the wins Wayne St. improves to 23-15-1 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning when Savannah Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Cathloic) hit a leadoff double, and was later driven in by a Hannah Shevenell (Madera, Calif. / Liberty) single, to give the Storm a 1-0 advantage. Wayne St. took the lead in the fourth with four runs to make the score, 4-1. Wayne St. added a run in the sixth and took a 5-1 advantage, and held on to win the game.
In game two, the Storm jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Allyson Hajnosz (Lordstown, Ohio / Lordstown) hit a solo homerun. Wayne St. tied the game with one run in the bottom of the first. Wayne St. added a run in the second to take a 2-1 advantage. Wayne St. took a 4-1 lead with two runs in the fifth. Wayne St. increased the lead with two runs in the sixth, and took a 6-1 advantage. Elizabeth Karako (Fairport Harbor, Ohio / Lake Catholic) ripped a double to lead off the sixth, and was pinch run for by Amber Dowen (New Lyne, Ohio / Pymatuning Valley). Dowen was driven in by S. Karako when she hit a double to right field. Later in the inning Darrian Yanek (Youngstown, Ohio / South Range) hit a sacrifice fly to score S. Karako, to make the score 6-3 in favor of Wayne St.
Dawn Ondercin (Sheffield, Ohio / Brookside) was on the mound for the Storm and pitched all 14 innings on the day. In the two games Ondercin allowed five earned runs. Ondercin only gave up one walk and had four strikeouts on the day.
The Storm will be back in action Wednesday (April 8th) when they host Findlay, with the first game of the double header starting at 3:30 P.M.
