PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Facing cold temperatures and windy conditions, Lake Erie College competed at the Ashland University Alumni Open Saturday (April 28).
The tough conditions hurt the Storm's chances at setting personal-bests and NCAA qualifying times but they did not harm junior Eric Klucar (Medina, Ohio/Highland) who won the pole vault with a season-best vault of 4.91 meters. The leap set an NCAA provisional qualifying mark for the junior.
Sophomore Jamil Dudley (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon) also joined the winner's circle. Already an NCAA qualifier, Dudley cleared 2.16 meters (7'1") to take home the title in the high jump.
The Lake Erie men had an additional top five finisher in junior Garrett Ondrus (Oregon, Ohio/Clay). Ondrus placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles in 15.26.
The Storm women had three top five finishes. Senior Alex Ardo (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) placed second in the triple jump at 10.27 m, junior Samantha Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) finished third in the 400-meter dash in a season-best 1:00.85 and freshman Ariana Jorgensen (Ontario, Canada/Henry Carr Secondary) took fifth in the 100-meter dash in 13:30.
This was the last event for the Storm leading up to the GLIAC Championship which begins Wednesday in Allendale, Mich.
