KENT, OHIO – A small, select group of runners from the Lake Erie College track and field teams competed at the Kent State Tune-Up at Kent State University Saturday (Feb. 16). The Storm competed in five events and claimed five top-10 finishes.
The highlight of the day came in the final event of the meet, the men's 4x400-meter relay. The Storm team of redshirt junior All-American Ethan Snyder (Salesville, Ohio/Buckeye Trail), senior Joe Lockard (Columbus, Ohio/Circleville) and freshmen Keith Hemphill (Warrensville Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) and Ira George (Dayton, Ohio/Dunbar) posted a season-best and NCAA Division II Indoor Championships provisional time of 3:16.60, finishing fourth. That time puts the squad in the top-20 nationally and was just 1.16 seconds off the school record set on the same track in 2011.
Individually, Snyder (48.54 seconds, 7th) and Hemphill (48.65, 9th) each posted top-10 finishes in the men's 400-meter run. Senior Garrett Ondrus (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) took 10th place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.56 seconds.
Sophomore Ariana Jorgensen (Kleinburg, Ontario/Emily Carr Secondary) was the only member of the women's team to compete. She finished eighth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.13 seconds) and ran a solid 8.26 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries, but did not qualify for the finals.
The Storm now turns its attention to the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships next weekend, Feb. 23-24, at Grand Valley State University.
