Off and running: GLIAC meet gets underway

GENEVA, Ohio – Day one of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships has come and gone, and the host Lake Erie Storm had some solid performances on Wednesday.

Sophomore Sean Stone narrowly missed out on a top-8 spot in the men's hammer throw. With a season-best toss of 52.46 meters (172-08), Stone finished 10th.

The opening events of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon made for most of Wednesday's action, so the hammer throws marked the day's only scoring events. Through those events, Ashland leads in both the men's and women's divisions. Thirty teams (16 women's, 14 men's) are competing in the league's title meet, with LEC hosting the event at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Two Storm men – Kurtis Taylor and Christopher Vogel – rank in the decathlon's top-10 through day one. Likewise, freshman Nikki Mosby is in 10th place in the heptathlon.

The meet is slated to continue on Thursday and Friday.
