STORM LOOK TO CONTINUE RECORD RUN: The Lake Erie College women's basketball team looks to extend a pair of school records on Saturday, Feb. 13, when it plays its penultimate game of the regular season at Ohio Dominican University. The Storm has won nine in a row and 17 overall this season, both program highs, and is coming off a 61-58 win at home Saturday over Central State. Lake Erie is also going for a season sweep of the Panthers, having defeated ODU 84-53 at home just two weeks ago. The Panthers defeated Wilberforce 92-84 on Thursday night, their first game since Feb. 2 due to inclement weather that forced the cancellation of two games.
REGIONALLY RANKED: The Storm is ranked for the first time in the Division II NCAA Regional Rankings released earlier this week. Lake Erie is currently 10th in the Midwest Region and has a victory over ranked teams Seton Hill (8th, Atlantic Region)and Grand Valley State (6th, Midwest).
THINK PINK, TAKE TWO: Last week, the Storm donned pink shooting shirts and accessories as part of the "Taking Breast Cancer by Storm" event which raised over $1,400 for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. On Saturday, Lake Erie will once again put on the pink in support of Ohio Dominican's "Pink Wave" event.
SERIES HISTORY: Lake Erie leads the series 3-2 after its win two weeks ago at home. The Storm and Panthers have alternated wins throughout the series, which began in 1989. Ohio Dominican holds a 2-1 edge in games played in Columbus, including a 78-61 win on Dec. 14, 1993 - the most recent meeting there.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE STORM: The Storm nearly let go of a 22-point second half lead but held off Central State, 61-58, for a school record ninth straight win (and 17th overall) on senior day. Renese Ames, playing her final home game, and junior Alyssa Wagers led the way with 17 points apiece. Wagers just missed a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds and Ames paced the defensive effort with five steals - including one in the closing seconds to secure the Storm's win. Lake Erie shot just 36.5% from the field, but forced the Marauders into 25 turnovers. In addition to Ames, Wagers and sophomore Stephanie Rogers each had four of the team's 16 steals. Rogers also blocked five shots in the game.
UP NEXT: Lake Erie closes its regular season next Saturday, Feb. 20, at Urbana.
